A virtual fabric collection created during lockdown inspired by the Lanificio Ermenegildo Zegna’s advertising ads from the 1930s: this was the challenge proposed by Professor Rossano Bisio to his students who were all at home, sharing knowledge, ideas and inspirations online, in order to create a brilliant ” capsule ”of fabrics for men’s clothing. An exciting project made possible thanks to the Zegna Foundation.

One of the main skills of a fabric designer is to come up with innovative ideas, identify their substantial aspects and developing commercially-appealing designs and prints for a variety of fabrics. A unique talent which requires specialized skills by integrating art with technical knowledge, intuition and creativity.

This is precisely the core aspect of the course, Design and Fabric Creation, taught by Professor Rossano Bisio, thanks to his more than thirty years of experience in the sector. The course is made up of company visits, meetings with industry professionals as well as, sharing in the classroom the many inspirations coming from the world of art and culture, but also from nature and society. All of these factors are then transformed into ideas for new fabrics by using textile CAD systems

Despite the restrictions of the lockdown, the students enthusiastically accepted Professor Bisio’s proposal to participate in a project which involved a solid collaboration with the Casa Zegna Foundation who gave TAM students access to consult their outstanding textile archives and above all, direct contact with Danilo Craveia, professional archivist and technical manager of the Casa Zegna Archive.

TAM students worked on the project by using three beautiful images dating back to the 1930s, provided by Casa Zegna, which were described in detail by Danilo Craveia himself, providing the students with new ideas and inspiration.

At this point the students’ mission was to understand the fundamental essence that works of this kind can still communicate to us and carry out an updating process aimed at creating a hypothetical virtual “capsule” within the Lanificio Ermenegildo Zegna’s collection.
